- Register your “empadronamiento”. This municipal registration certifies your residence in Valencia. It’s a prerequisite for almost every other procedure: healthcare, visa processing, ID appointments, and more.
- Apply for your NIE or TIE. These are foreigner identification numbers or cards. You’ll need one to open a bank account, sign contracts, work legally, register as self-employed, and more.
- Request your digital certificate. This is one of Spain’s best-kept bureaucratic secrets. It allows you to do nearly everything online: book appointments, file taxes, access social security, submit visa renewals, and even sign documents electronically. It saves time, energy, and frustration.
«If you do things in this order, you’ll be surprised at how smoothly everything flows. If not, you’ll be stuck in circles,» Tiscar explained.

Is it easier to apply from my home country or after arriving in Spain as a tourist?
Tiscar’s answer was realistic and balanced:
«Both paths are legally viable, but the best option depends entirely on your nationality, your timing, and the availability of appointments, either at a Spanish consulate or at immigration offices in Spain.»
